Xin Hai Hu is the largest dredging machine to ever opperate at Port of Santos
Xin Hai Hu dredger works at Porto f Santos since March. The equipment with 150,7 meters long, 27 wide and 42 deep, has a static capacity of 13,5 thousand cubic meters and is considered worldwide as the most advanced of its kind manufactured by China. The equipment comes to joy CDB´s team (Consortium Draga Brasil) that already counts on Hang Jun 5001, with capacity for 5 thousand cubic meters. With both devices working 24/7, the Consortium has been dredging about 70 thousand cubic meters daily.
Built in 2006 by Guangzhou Wenchong yard at a cost of US$ 80 million, Xin Hai Hu is controlled by computers, which lowers the cost of operation and is equipped with the latest technology. The dredger has a range of equipment including the GPS (Global Positioning System) that allows position monitoring (latitude and longitude) in real time. The technology is in accordance with the requirements of regulatory agencies, especially regarding the environment.
CDB´s board of directors explains that the GPS is accurate and “allows controlling the geographic location of each sediment discharge, as required by contract. For this purpose, electronic fences are installed on the perimeter of each quadrant of the discharge area. These fences monitor dates and times of entry and exit of the vessel in space provided in the project”, summarizes Licius Guimarães, executive director of the CBD.
Xin Hai Hu has also worked in Rio de Janeiro, at Açu Port Complex. That was the first operation carried out by the dredge outside China after its launching in 2007. The equipment was also mobilized by CBD to work in Itajai (SC), whose channel was silted by rains and floods that ravaged the region late 2008. In Itajaí, CDB has provided Xin Hai Hu equipment financing the whole operation because the dredge was not part of contract at the time.
